NAMESAKE

The story behind where Griffin Environmental got its name is one of legacy and joy out of sadness.  The owner of the company, Heston Stein and his wife Krissy, welcomed their triplet babies into the world on November 7, 2008.

He had been born without eyes and it took six months of genetic testing to even put a name to Griffin’s condition - SOX2 anophthalmia syndrome.  With it came a significant list of other hurdles including partial deafness, lack of motor skills that left him wheelchair bound, esophageal issues that required eating through a feeding tube, slow physical and mental development, an inability to speak, numerous medications, and several extended hospital stays and surgeries, among others.

Over the course of the next ten years, the Stein family made every effort to give Griffin as full a life as possible.  In spite of the hand that was dealt to Griffin, he was the very embodiment of joy.  He always had a smile on his face and was always elated interacting with friends and family.  He had a small army of friends, family, teachers, aids, doctors, therapists, and even an amazing charity that all came to be collectively known as Team Griffin. Chive Charities played a pivotal role in Griffin’s life, providing the Steins with a handicapped accessible van that gave him so much more freedom than he had previously.  Chive Charities also lent their considerable leverage to a viral fundraiser that saw more than 5,700 people across the globe donate money, goods, services, and elbow grease to see the Stein’s house transformed into a space that Griffin could thrive in, complete with an open floor plan, handicapped accessible bathroom, wheelchair ramp into the house, and significantly more room for everyone.

Sadly, Griffin’s health began to deteriorate in 2018, including his ability to breathe properly.  After several surgeries, he had a tracheostomy and required a ventilator that came with overnight nursing and required round the clock medical attention.  Less than a year later, Griffin passed away in May of 2019.  His funeral showed how loved he was by so many people and how big an impact such a little boy had made on so many.

Heston Stein opened Griffin Environmental, naming the company after his son at the suggestion of Griffin’s triplet sister, Kaylee.  Honoring Griffin’s perseverance and joy in spite of all the hardships he struggled through seemed a fitting tribute to such an amazing boy who was in the world for such a short time.
